What Does an Accountant Do for Small Businesses?

What Accountant Does For Business

Running a small business in the UK is no small feat. 83% of business owners say their accountant has helped reduce the impact of inflation, and 93% feel their accountant lowers their stress.

Many owners struggle to keep up: 27.8% of SME leaders lose sleep over business finances, and 38.3% lack confidence in their financial management.

But research shows that support from a qualified accountant makes a measurable difference. Small businesses that use accountants see an average revenue increase of 11.5%, with sole traders gaining an extra £6,176 annually.

Want to switch to More Than Accountants? You can get an instant quote online by using the form below. In a like for like comparison for services we are up to 70% cheaper than a high street accountant.

Let’s break down the essential roles an accountant plays and how their expertise translates into measurable value for your business.

Role of an Accountant

1. Financial Management

Table of Contents

  • 1. Financial Management
  • 2. Bookkeeping and Record-Keeping for HMRC
  • 3. Tax Compliance and Planning

  • Why UK Small Businesses Should Invest in an Accountant

Overseeing finances goes well beyond basic bookkeeping. A small retail shop in Manchester, once struggling with tight margins, collaborated with its accountant to establish stronger cash flow forecasting and regular expense tracking. Within a year, they reduced unnecessary spending by 18% and finally turned a profit.

Accountants help you:

  • Track expenses and file Tax Returns with record-keeping needs, such as Making Tax Digital (MTD).
  • Monitor cash flow by identifying late-paying clients and staying ahead of payment deadlines, which is crucial for businesses navigating 30-day supplier terms.
  • Stay Compliant and maintain budgets with cloud platforms (e.g., Xero, QuickBooks) that are HMRC-recognised, providing real-time insight.
  • Analyse profitability by calculating gross profit vs net profit by accounting standards, so you know exactly where your business stands and what it lacks.

2. Bookkeeping and Record-Keeping for HMRC

Bookkeeping is more involved in the UK due to regulations like Making Tax Digital (MTD) and strict VAT requirements. A freelance graphic designer in Bristol switched from spreadsheets to software on her accountant’s advice; her VAT returns became error-free, and she saved hours each month.

Accountants ensure that:

  • All the records correspond to the HMRC under MTD reforms and VAT regulations, from invoices to receipts.
  • Accountants ensure compliance with legal filing deadlines and avoid possible penalties, as evidenced by over 600,000 late filing penalties issued by HMRC in the past five years.
  • Monthly profit and loss statements, balance sheets, and cash flow reports are vital for any kind of loan applications and strategic planning.

3. Tax Compliance and Planning

Compliance with Companies House and HMRC

Tax rules are among the most complex in the world. Miss your Corporation Tax deadline and you could face starting penalties of £100, escalating quickly.

An accountant can:

  • Timely filing of VAT, Self-Assessment, and Corporation Tax. For example, a construction company based in Leeds managed to save over £2,000 that would have been spent on late penalties throughout the previous year.
  • Maximise allowable expenses through identifying deductions like working from home costs, travel, and capital allowances.
  • Offer tax efficiency advice, including pension contributions, R&D relief, and optimal dividend vs. salary strategies for company directors.
  • Deal with HMRC directly. From checking for compliance to dealing with audits, accountants save business owners from time-consuming and stressful tasks.

4. Payroll and Auto-Enrolment Compliance

Dealing with PAYE, auto-enrolment pensions, and changing National Minimum Wage laws is tricky. A café owner in London credited her accountant with catching an underpayment error, fixing it before an HMRC inspection, avoiding fines and reputational damage.

Accountants can:

  • Pay employees in line with RTI (Real Time Information) submissions so HMRC gets up-to-date employee records.
  • Work out National Insurance, pensions, and statutory leave to stay ahead of the law, including reporting to The Pension Regulator.
  • Provide details on employment status and IR35, as required by businesses that utilise freelancers or contractors.

5. Strategic Business Advice Backed by Real Data

Secure grants and loans with help of accountants

Accountants do more than just prepare your accounts. A Midlands-based food startup, for example, used its accountant’s forecasting to secure a £50,000 business growth grant.

Their advice includes:

  • Cash flow forecasting for funding applications, such as those with a bank loan or government grant, can make approval much likelier with robust projections.
  • Business structure recommendations to help you decide whether operating as a sole trader, partnership, or limited company is best for you, considering your tax and liabilities.
  • Preparing for audits and staying up-to-date on legal changes: For instance, the shift to MTD for Income Tax from April 2026 will impact millions.

Why UK Small Businesses Should Invest in an Accountant

Small business owners may view accounting costs as expenses, but in reality, a proactive accountant often pays for themselves many times over. According to QuickBooks, UK small businesses that delegate financial admin spend 30% less time on paperwork and see up to 12% higher profits on average.

Key benefits:

  • Avoid fines and penalties: Accountants keep you compliant and informed about deadlines.
  • Identify new savings and reliefs: R&D tax credits alone saved SMEs over £6.6bn in 2023.
  • Gain strategic insights: Financial forecasting, scenario planning, and funding support.
  • More time for growth: Less admin means more resources for product, service, or customer experience.

An accountant is far more than a number cruncher. They’re a trusted partner—protecting you from regulatory pitfalls, unlocking tax savings, and enabling your long-term success. With numerous changes in the tax landscape, the right expertise is an investment that pays for itself in terms of peace of mind, profitability, and sustainability.

Whether you’re just starting or looking to scale, now is the perfect time to see what a qualified accountant can do for your small business.

I cannot recommend More than Accountants highly enough! From the first meeting, I was impressed by their professionalism, knowledge, and dedication to helping clients succeed. They took the time to understand my financial situation and goals, and they provided tailored advice that has significantly impacted my financial health. Their attention to detail is truly commendable. I have always felt confident knowing that my accounts are managed with the utmost precision. Not only did my accountant (Hasrat ) do my taxes promptly, but he also got me a refund!! More than accountants are always available to answer questions and respond quickly, making what could be a stressful process quite manageable. I’m incredibly grateful for their guidance and support, and I look forward to many years of continued collaboration!

After a bit of a rocky start with this accountants, they now deal with all 4 of my active companies. And, the major contributing factor in this is the excellent care and attention that I receive from Arshiya. I actually insisted that she be kept as my main point of contact in my dealings with More than Accountants and I feel extremely looked after. On another note, their unlimited package is quite expensive, but in my eyes it's worth it as they handle everything, meaning I don't have to worry about anything. Plus, I know if I need anything in the interim it's simply covered in the fees already without needing to fork out extra here and there.
